Sample Application Essay For Graduate School

Sample Application Essay For Graduate SchoolWhen I was in graduate school, the dean required a sample application essay for graduate school. It seemed like a huge thing to ask me, but at the time, I didn't really know how to write one. I had never done it before, so I figured I would get help from my professor, who was a TA. I just made sure that the file was full of my personal information and personal hobbies and wrote about me as if I were just another applicant. For my essay, I tried to combine my personal information with information about my school. After all, my school was a great place for me, and if I lived anywhere else, I wouldn't be able to get into my school. So I wrote about how I had worked there and how I liked the people and the things that I learned from the place.Remember that if you're applying to graduate school, you're going to have to write a sample application essay for your school. It can make the difference between you getting in or getting turned down.

As earlier discussed, fruit juice are being perceived as the healthier option over the conventional carbonated drinks. Thus, high level of sugar content will dilute the healthier aspect of the food zone. In this case, Berri and Minute Maid are frontrunners (Upson et al. 2012). According to the customers, fruit juices of these brands are having less amount of sugar content and thus they more prefer these brands over food zone. In this aspect, Minute Maid is ahead in the competition. Their sugar free content in their fruit juices is attracting more health conscious customers. Pricing is another issue in the customer experience for Food zone. According to several customers, fruit juices of Food zone is a bit overpriced compared to its competitors. In the Australian market, Minute maid, Tropicana and Berri are more renowned than that of food zone. It is due to the reason that, Food zone is a new entrant in the market and thus it constitute of less brand image than its competitors (Severi and Ling 2013). However, Food zone opted for premium pricing. It has adversely affected on the customer experience. According to the several customers, they have found nothing special in the fruit juice of Food zone for which they have to pay extra price. Tropicana and other brands being having more brand image in the market are charging less. Thus, customers automatically prefer other brands over Food zone. According to the market survey, several customers are not satisfied with the taste of the Food zone. According to them, the taste of the orange juice of Food zone is not taste authentic and slightly bitterly in nature. It is another major issue of Food zone over its competitors. Fruit juices is being marketed as an alternative to the carbonated drinks but still it should taste good to attract customers. Tropicana and Minute Maid have more favorable taste which attracts all types of customer segments. Moreover, proof of authentic ingredients is also important for the customers opting for the fruit drinks as a healthier option (Popkin 2012). According to the market survey, several customers prefer Tropicana and Minute Maid just because of their authenticity. Some customers told in the market survey that the taste of the fruit juice of Food zone is sometimes not up to the mark. Thus they become skeptical about the quality of the ingredients being used in the juices. This issue also make s the customers to go for other options rather than going for Food zone. The taste of the fruit juice of fruit zone should be attractive to the customers and the ingredients used in the process should be properly notified to the customers. Moreover, according to the ideal customer experience management, the customer service in terms of providing effective after sales service also affects the customer experience. According to majority of the customer, the after sales service and the customer relationship management of the competitors such as Minute Maid and Tropicana is much more effective than that of the Food zone. Thus, the customer grievance cannot be effectively met. Hence, it can be concluded that the forward integration in the customer experience management is facing issues. Issues in customer experience management Delivering effective and efficient customer experience across all channels is difficult to be maintained by the organizations. It requires a holistic approach in maintaining the entire aspects of the customer experience management. Customer experience management is based on the technologies. The more updated and latest will be the technologies being used, the more will be the customer convenience. However, the technologies are rapidly changing and it is difficult for the organizations to cope up with the changing environment. The taste and preference pattern of the customers are also variable in nature. With the time, the taste and preference pattern of the customer is changing. Thus, it is difficult for the organizations to adjust with the change and design their customer experience management. Though feedback systems are being initiated in order to address the customer grievance. However, the expectation of the customers gets varied with the actual feedback management. Every customers have diversified expectations and it is difficult to meet all the requirements and expectations of the customers. Customer experience map The customer experience map can be divide in to three parts which portrays the experience before, during and after the purchase of the product. The need generation and the initial consideration analyze the experiences before the purchase (Mihart 2012). Engagement and the evaluation part analyze the experience during the purchase and the rest of the factors analyze the experience after the purchase (Howard 2014). Relationship These types of personas are extrovert and have a lot of interaction with the other members of the society. The need is generated for them from the word of mouth and they gain the information from the online medium and from friends and family. This is phase where the customer finds out the information before purchasing of the product. The people belonging to this category will interact with the sales executive to find whether the product is satisfying the need of the customers (Jahanshani et al 2014). The will try to develop a good relationship with the sales executive and clarify all the questions they have in their mind. The final experience shows the comparison between the previous and present experience. This comparison will determine the customer will turn in to a loyal customer or search for a substitute in the market (Sahagun and Vasquez-Parraga 2014). The customers were eager to try out the product as it offered quality than the other products in the market but after usage of the product, the customer had issues with the taste. There are some of the customers who did not like the taste of the product. Innovator These types of personas are creative and will try to search for products, which have a unique selling proposition. The uniqueness of the product will be the evaluation point for the customer and they will try to differentiate based on the quality. The clarification will include the comparison among the various products in the market. When the product is bought, the customer will compare the uniqueness of the product with his or her own expectation. This will be the factor, which will determine whether the customer will be loyal to the brand or shift to the other products, which look lucrative (Sahagun and Vasquez-Parraga 2014). This group of customers was eager to try out the uniqueness but after the usage some of them thought that the sugar content is high. Analytical These types of personas are very critical about the product and they like to make a total analysis so that they can gather all the information about the product. There are very careful customers and do not take risky decisions. They like to evaluate all the factors before purchasing and they have to convince to buy the product. This group of customers analyzed all the aspects of the product and was concerned about the price of the product (Ellickson, Misra and Nair 2012). However, after the usage of the product some of them are of the opinion that the price of the product is high when compared to the quality of the product served. Thus, after taking feedbacks from the customer, the experience map shows that price, taste and the sugar content are the factors which should be brought under scrutiny (Moghaddam 2015). Conclusion Therefore, the market survey and the customer experience shows that, the current service experience of the customers regarding Food zone is favorable but there are some issues which need to be addressed. Customer experience map showed that price, quality and taste are the areas where competitors are going ahead of food zone. Thus, these areas should be improved in order to increase the positive experience of the customers. Currently, customers are willing to have one of a kind product in the fruit juice categories which are being properly fulfilled by the Food zone. However, customers prefer the competitors products than the products of Food zone due to the indentified areas of gap. Fruit juice markets in the Australia are already having established brands such as Tropicana and Minute Maid. Thus, it is obvious that the customer will compare the newly introduced products in the market with the established brands. Therefore, to survive in the market and to generate positive customer experience, Food zone should rectify the gaps being identified in this research. It will help them to serve the customers more effectively and efficiently References Andzulis, J.M., Panagopoulos, N.G. and Rapp, A., 2012. legal position of directors Essay Example

legal position of directors Essay LEGAL POSITION OF THE DIRECTORS OF THE COMPANY Mrs. Kamya Rani Mrs. Sukhbir Kaurl A company is an artificial person created by law. It functions through human agents who are collectively called Board of Directors. They are termed as Trustees of the assets of the company who sees that company business is carried on in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the company. They decides policies of the company keeping in view the main objects for which the company was formed. Only an Individual is eligible for appointment as a Director of the company. There are various types of directors: 1 . Executive Directors i. e Managing Director, Whole time director 2. Non Executive Director Nominee Director Institutional Nominee Promotional Institutional Nominee Lending Institutional Nominee Holding company nominee Collaborator Nominee Government Nominee us. 48B Debenture holder Nominee Independent Director Others The individual cannot be a director for more than 15 public limited companies. The Directors of the company are custodians of the interest of the stakeholders which includes: (i) Employees Shareholders Creditors Customers Society It is not easy to explain the position that a director holds in a corporate enterprise. A director is not a servant of any master. He is the controller of the companys affairs. Director of a company is neither an employee nor a servant to the company. They are professional people who were hired by the company to direct its affairs. However there is no restriction under the Act, that a director cannot be an employee to the company. In Lee v. Lees Air Farming Ltd 1961 AC 12, it was held that, a director may, however, work as an employee in different capacity. Director includes any person who is occupying the position of a director, whatever name called. Director As Agents In Ferguson v. Wilson (1866) 2 Ch App 77, the court clearly recognised that directors are in the eyes of law, agents of the company. It was held that, the company has no person; it can act only through directors and the case is, as regards those directors, merely the ordinary case of a principal and agent. When the directors contract in the name, and on behalf of the company, it is the company which is liable on it and not the directors. In Elkington Co. v. Hurter 1892(2) CH 452, where the plaintiff supplied certain goods to a company tnrougn Its cnalrman, wno promlsea to Issue nlm a debenture for the price, but never did so and company went into liquidation, he was held not liable to the plaintiff. Similarly, a director was held to be personally not liable in a suit against a private chit fund company. Attachment of the property of the director was held to be not permissible. Like agents, directors have to disclose their personal interest, if any, in any transaction of the company. In Ray Cylinders Containers v. Hindustan General Industries Ltd(2001) 103 CC 161, held that, the directors are the agents of the institution and not of its individual members, except when that relationship arises due to the special facts of the case. Also granted permission to file a suit against a company was not allowed to be treated as permission against directors as well. In Sarathi Leasing Finance Ltd v. B Narayana Shetty(2006) 131 CC 798, the articles of association empowered the managing director to represent the company in legal proceedings. It was held that a further authorization was not necessary to enable im to file a complaint for dishonor of cheque under Sec. 138 of Negotiable Instrument Act. Directors are the agents of a company. They are acting on behalf of the company. So the directors cannot be held personally liable for any default of the company. It was held that, for a loan taken by a company, the directors, who had not given any personal guarantee to the creditor, could not be made liable merely because they were directors. Director As Trustees Directors are the trusties of the companys money, property and their powers and such must account for all the moneys over which they exercise control and shall efund any moneys improperly paid away, and shall exercise their powers honestly in the interest of the company and all the shareholders, and not their own sectional interest. To whom the directors are trustee? Whether to the company or to the individual shareholders. This principle was laid down in 1902 in Percival v. Wright, and still holds ground as a basic proposition. In this case the court held that, directors have no duty towards individual shareholders. From this it is very clear that, the directors are trustees to the company and not of individual shareholders. The principle of the case was reiterated in Peskin v. Anderson. Ordinarily the directors are not agents or trustees of members or shareholders and owe no fiduciary duties to them. However we have to take the decision of Allen v. Hyatt(1914) 30 TLR 444. It was held that, the directors are trustees of the profit for the benefit of the shareholders. They cannot always act under the impression that they owe no duty to the individual shareholders. But it is of no doubt that the primary duty of the director is to the company. Director As Organs Of Corporate Body The organic theory of corporate life treats certain officials as organs of the company, or whose action the company is held liable Just as a natural person is for the action of his limbs. Thus the modern directors are more than mere agents or trustees. The Board is also correctly recognised to be a primary organ of the company. Directors and managers represent the directing mind or will of the company and control what it does. The state of mind of these managers is the state of mind of the company and is treated by law as such. The practical effects of these rules are that the directors personal fault in the business of the company becomes the fault of the company; nelr reason to Delleve Is attrlDutea to tne company ana tne Intentlon to occupy a premises as expressed by their conduct is the intention of the company. CHANGES MADE BY THE NEW COMPANIES ACT, 2013 The 1956 Act prescribed minimum 2 directors for a private and 3 for a public company respectively to constitute a Board. This criterion has been retained by the new Act, but the maximum limit of directors on the Board has now been raised from 12 to 15. The Act has also removed the stringent compliance of securing prior Central Government approval for raising the number of directors beyond the prescribed limit nd, instead, a comparatively simpler method of approval by means of a special resolution of the shareholders has been introduced. Additionally, new changes include mandatory presence of independent directors on the Board of listed public companies and minimum one woman director in the case of certain class of companies to be notified later, thereby bringing more transparency and gender equality into the Board rooms. The legislation clearly defines the role of such independent directors and has a detailed Code for independent directors appended to it, which contains explicit guidelines for professional conduct, roles and esponsibilities of such directors. They are bound by this Code to play a role in the appointments, determination of remuneration and removal of executive directors, managers and key managerial personnel. In view of the fiduciary position held by directors, explicit provisions prescribing directors duties have been added to the new Act. These include keeping away from situations in which they have conflicting interest with that of the company, duty to make good in monetary terms any undue gain/advantage on the part of the directors etc. Independent directors: The provision o make companies have one-third of their board members as independent directors is fine in principle. Independent directors (IDs) are also more stringently defined, and their tenures will be limited to two terms adding up to 10 years. IDs can also hold a maximum of 20 directorships. The best thing about the new Companies Act is that it is simple, with greater clarity of intent and purpose. Sounds good? But there are pitfalls. For three reasons. First, how independent can IDs be when they are appointed and paid for by the promoters? Will promoters appoint truly independent people on boards? Second, are there enough persons available to be appointed as IDs? In theory, yes, because there are no qualifications for becoming an ID. But, in practice, once you tell the prospective person the responsibilities he will bear, the actual number of competent and willing IDs diminishes. Most IDs, in fact, end up adorning corporate boards without the time or commitment to work in the interests of shareholders. Third, if eligible IDs end up taking up 20 directorships each, how can they really serve each of those companies shareholders diligently? According to a CNBC TV18 report, AnalJit Singh of Max India, for example, attended only one out of 4 board meeting of Dabur in three years, before he resigned. How did he really help protect Daburs shareholder interests by remaining absent? The conclusion: it is good to have many IDs, but corporate governance will need a heavy dose of regulation too to complete the picture. Women directors: It is important for corporate boards to ensure gender diversity, but before that happens, a supply of women eligible for board positions needs to be created. According to GMI Ratings Women on Boards Survey 2013, even on the worlds best-known companies, women account for only 1 1 ercent 0T total alrectorsnlps. In Inala, a sample 0T BY companies witn more tnan S billion in market valuation, the women percentage is less than 7 percent. And we are talking only about the biggest companies here. Clearly, major efforts will have to be made to create more women directors, but before that there have to be more women reaching the top of the corporate hierarchy. The legislation should act as a spur to womens empowerment, but compliance could be years away. Insurance and Genetics Testing Essays

Insurance and Genetics Testing Essays Insurance and Genetics Testing Paper Insurance and Genetics Testing Paper Do you have health insurance? When you go to the doctor do you think about how your insurance gives you coverage? When your pay check is a little short because of your premium are you angry? I would like to discuss with you what is going to happen when genetic testing becomes more widely used. In order to discuss how genetic testing is going to affect the insurance industry we must first discuss how insurance works. I know that there are two sides to every story, so I would also like to discuss the pros and cons of genetic testing. Hopefully, by the end of this presentation you will better understand why this is such an important topic. First, I would like to talk about how insurance works. According to Risk Management and Insurance, insurance is defined as a social device in which a group of individuals who transfer risk in order to combine experience, which permits mathematical prediction of losses, and provides for payment of losses from funds contributed by all members who transferred risk. Insurance is based on the uncertainty of life. If you have a risk, then most people tend to want to get rid of the risk, or transfer it. The person who transfers risk is the insured and the one who assumes risk, is the insurer. Once you decide to transfer risk you are put into a pool, or a group in which everyone has the same risk as you. Not everyone in the pool is going to get the disease or ailment but they all pay the same premium to cover the people who do. The premium is based on the amount of risk you have. This is based entirely on history and statistics. This is a topic on the mind of many people who are involved in the industry. It is also an important topic in government. Democrats and civil rights groups favor legislation that would set stringent privacy standards, ban discrimination by insurers and employers, and allow discrimination victims to seek uncapped damages in court. They have so far been unable to pass such a bill. Republicans have supported more narrow legislation, focusing on discrimination by insurers only. Most Americans want privacy, and of course do not want to be discriminated against. The industry wants to find a healthy way of dealing with genetic testing, since there is no way to stop people from getting the tests. There are good things as well as bad that come along with technological advances such as genetic testing. Using genetic testing can help find a disease, that with early detection can be treated. It can also be used to detect a genetic disease in an unborn child, or the probability that the couple will have a child with a genetic disease. This, in effect, reduces the uncertainty of life. That is where the effect on insurance comes in. If we know that we are not going to have a certain disease then it is likely we will choose not to insure against that specific disease. That leaves only the ones who will get sick to seek insurance. Since, insurance uses the premium from the ones who do not develop the disease to pay for the ones who do have the disease, this creates a problem. There would not be enough money to pay for all of the care of the insured. Not all illnesses are caused by genetics, so of course there would still be a need for some insurance. According to an article in Christian Science Monitor , more than 80% of Americans seek to block the access of employers and insurance companies to genetic information according to polls. If insurance companies do not have access to these tests, it is my opinion the insurance industry will go bankrupt. Based on information given to the insurance company, such as; height, weight, age, sex, and previous history, an insured will be put into a pool with others who know they are going to get a disease and are not paying enough to cover it. This will drive the price of insurance so high, to try and cover for those with the disease. Eventually only those who know they have a disease will be willing to pay so much for insurance. Since insurance is based on uncertainty that is where the problem comes in. If everyone with insurance is certain to have a genetic disease there is no uncertainty, therefor no insurance. On the other hand, if they had access to the results of genetic testing, there could be a lot of problems also. They could deny anyone with a genetic disease, and then there would also not be any uncertainty. The insurance company would make a lot of profit off of those who do not have a tendency towards a disease. This way is more easy to fix than the first. The industry is trying to figure out a way to deal with this now. If the government denies insurance companies access to results then they will go bankrupt. If the government allows access, there are ways to prevent a problem. One fix would be set up special pools for those who have a tendency towards a disease. That would allow them to pay a premium based on the fact that they have the tendency. They could then have some sort of government funding to back up the insurance for these people. Or the government could completely fund the medical care of those who cannot get insurance, although either way it is still going to amount to other Americans paying for the disease. I know that many people do not even think about the effect that genetic testing is going to have on our future. As and insurance major, I think about it often. It is a topic that should not be ignored. I am not usually one who is thrilled about government intervention. In this case however, I make an exception. Without laws to regulate the industry it will be impossible for us to continue in the same fashion as today. My fix is to keep the government involved, that is the only way I see to stop the problem.

Innovation and Sustainability Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Innovation and Sustainability - Essay Example We are currently the principal species on the earth in all respects. And the environmental effects of our supremacy, as depicted by our overwhelming consumption and technological progress, can be seen in each and every corner of the human race. Such transformation in population and their shock necessitate cautious research so that scientists can comprehend and suggest thoughts for resource management (Turk & Bensel 2011). To be able to follow population trends in due course, scholars proposed the field of demography. Demographers’ focal point is on a few key variables namely— birth rates, death rates, and fertility rates—to find out and forecast how a populace changes over a point in time. Demographers have recognized the chief cause of the exponential growth in human popu lation of the ancient times as discrepancy between death rates and birth rates. All the way through nearly all of human history, both birth and death rates were high, but more or less consta nt, and hence the population was kept the same as well. Developments in science, medicine, sani tation, and nutrition over the last tens of two hundred years contributed to increasing the life expectancies and consequently a decline in mortality rates. Since birth rates did not instantaneously drop, as fatality rates declined, the overall human population increased. in the present day, birth rates in various nations have gone down to levels close to fatality rates, and their populations have started to become stable. On the other hand, other nations are still in the middle of a demographic evolution on the road to low overall birth and death rates. Reducing birth rates is the heart of nearly every country population policy, and there is much discussion over what strategies to employ. Without a doubt arguments between and among political, social, and reli gious realms frenzy over whether stricter, more forceful actions are required to shrink birth rates. Furthermore, a rising n umber of ecological scientists at present make out that besides the absolute numbers, wealth and the consumption patterns of persons in a certain population also have force on the surroundings. The relations between increasing human numbers, expanding levels of material comfort and consumption, and impacts on the environment are devastating. Human beings have related environmental resources as with respect to consumption is how citizens use resources matters a lot more. a number of of the people leave much bigger track than others. Global warming is an excellent case in point. Carbon emissions from fossil fuels are mounting fastest in China, thanks to its protracted economic growth, but fertility there is by now below replacement; not much more can be done to be in charge of popula tion. Where population is on the increase fastest, in sub-Saharan Africa, emissions per head are no more than a few percent of what they are in the U.S.— hence population control would have slig ht effect on climate. Man has regarded environmental resources as finite. That is why it is imperative to sustainably mange the environmental resources. Water, land and fossil fuels are scarce and are in high demand (Nafis, 2001). Therefore, in order to save human kind from these habits there is need to Change Our Patterns of Production and Consumption to Save

ASDA Case Analysis Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

ASDA Case Analysis - Assignment Example The company had acquired loans to facilitate its expansion and it was therefore necessary for the organization to develop new measures to ensure profitability. The management was unable to ensure that the new stores were profitable. Communication between employees and the management is a serious issue for any organization. There was a breakdown in communication between the management and lower level employees in the organization. The management structure in an organization can limit communication and ASDA had placed a structure that prohibited effective communication. 2. The organization faced serious management issues ranging from lack of motivation for workers to poor financial decisions. According to the motivational theory, employees can only perform when they are given flexibility and the chance to succeed. At ASDA, creativity from the employees was continuously repressed and they lacked the ambition to succeed in the work place. In addition, leadership theories such as transactional theory suggest that leadership is about focusing on the set goals and motivating employees to achieve these goals. At ASDA, these problems created a vacuum, which in turn brought about uncertainty. The financial crunch at the time and bad management were therefore responsible for the issues at ASDA. The goal setting theory states that organization should set goals. The management should therefore have set clear goals to avoid the issues. Strategies adopted by Hardman introduced a dictatorial culture in the organization that inhibited creativity from the employe es. 3. It was clear to Norman that the culture in the organization needed an overhaul so that it could accommodate all employees and attract new customers. In addition, the shareholders needed to trust the organization once more. To achieve this, it was important to change employee attitude at ASDA. This should have been

Identity Theft and Facebook Essay Example for Free

Identity Theft and Facebook Essay Bullying amp; Suicide 3F Social networking is the main source teenagers turn to when they want to bully other people. Harsh statements and name calling are what is said to make the victim feel lonesome and pathetic. Bullying can quickly turn into cutting yourself or even committing suicide. That’s what happened to Holly Grogan who was tormented in school who felt her last resort was to just make it all stop by killing herself. (McWilliams, Geraldine, 2009, para. 1) Cyberstalkers 5D Real-world stalkers are known to know their victims personally. The Huffington Post reports that victims said their cyberstalkers were either acquaintances or complete strangers with few or unclear motives for harassment. Only 4% reported being stalked by a former partner, compared with victims of face-to-face stalking, where around half are former partners. (April, 11, 2011, para. 5) Obsessed with Facebook 4C As of 2011, there are 500,000,000 active Facebook users, which is approximately 1 in every 13 people on Earth. 48% of 18-34 year olds check Facebook as soon as they wake up. A record-breaking 750 million photos were uploaded on the site on New Year’s weekend. 57% more people talk online rather than in real life. (Think Marketing and Communications, 2011, para. 4) Obesity 8H More and more children are becoming comfortable facing their computer every day. They don’t go outside to play and socialize with other kids face-to-face as much. Kids are getting addicted to computer online games, chats, and social networking. The result is less body activity, a reduction in quality of life, and serious health risks. Getting hooked to the computer tends to make a person lazy to move and socialize. It is best to prevent them early in their life with more time exercising and less computer time. (TechXplore Inc. , 2011, para. 2) Nigerian Scammers 7G Nigerian Scammers have always been a problem on the internet. Two years ago, they were impersonating people on Facebook and asking for money. Facebook does have a pretty secure security system, yet imposters are able to receive a person’s information with just the click of a button. 0% of the people scammed are fooled and end up getting their money stolen from who they thought was someone they knew and trusted. (AOL Inc. , January, 26, 2009, para. 1) Murder 6E Murder is one of the most common negative results when using cyberspace. For instance, 41-year-old Edward Richardson of Staffordshire, England, killed his 26-year-old wife, Sarah, for changing her relationship status on Facebook to â€Å"single. † This act enraged Edward which caused him to break down Sarah’s door and stabbed her to death. According to the government, hes been sentenced to life in prison. AOL Inc. , 2009, para. 2) Formspring 9I A relatively new website called â€Å"Formspring. me† is a common innovation of cyber-bullying. This online page allows teenagers to ask open-ended questions about themselves or friends, with the option to ask anonymously. Many comments are rude and sexual, which causes parents to radar what their child is doing. The majority of teenagers set up their account to Tumblr, another social network, and invite hundreds of friends to ask questions without identifying themselves. (Kary, Mary Kate, 2010, para. 1-2)

Flash Memory Essay -- essays research papers

Flash Memory PSYCHOLOGY TERM PAPER Memory is the main faculty of retaining and recalling past experiences. A repressed memory, is one that is retained in the sub conscious mind, in which one is not aware of it but where it can still affect both conscious thoughts, memory, and behavior. When memory is distorted, the result can be referred to what has been called the "False Memory Syndrome"(Thomas Billing Publishing 1995) : a condition in which a person's identity and interpersonal relationships are entered around a memory of traumatic experience which is obviously false but the person strongly believes that it isn't. However, the syndrome is not only characterized by false memories alone. We all have memories that are inaccurate. Instead, the syndrome may be diagnosed when the memory is so severely disoriented that it changes the individual's entire personality and lifestyle, therefore, disrupting all sorts of other behaviors. The means of personality disorder is on purpose. False memory syndrome is especially destructive because the person carefully avoids any confrontation what so ever with any evidence that might challenge the memory. So this syndrome takes on a life of its own, keeping itself to be alone and resistant to correction. The person may become so focused on the memory that he or she may be effectively distracted from coping with real problems in his or her life. There are many models which try to explain how memory works. Nevertheless, we do not know exactly how memory works. One of the most questionable models of memory is the one which assumes that every experience a person has had is "recorded" in memory and that, "some of these memories are from traumatic events too terrible to want to remember"(Thomas Billings Publishing 1995). . These terrible memories are locked away in the sub conscious mind, (i.e. repressed, only to be remembered in adulthood when some triggering event opens the door to the unconscious). Both before and after the repressed memory is remembered, it causes physical and mental disorders in a person. Some people have made an effort to explain their pain. Even Cancer, was known to form in some through repressed memories of incest in the body. Scientists have studied related phenomenon such as people wh... ...he victim had been shown, there is no way of knowing whether the victim is remembering the assailant or the picture. Another interesting fact about memory is that studies have shown that there is no connection between the result feeling a person has about memory and that memory being accurate. Also, opposed to what many believe, hypnosis does not aid memory's accuracy because subjects are unconscience while under hypnosis.(Copeland Publishing 1989) It is possible to create false memories in people's minds by suggestion. Why would someone remember something so horrible if it really did not happen? This is a haunting question, but there are several possible explanations which might shed light on some of the false memories. A pseudomemory, for example, may be a kind of symbolic expression of troubled family relationships. It may be that in such a position people more readily believe things happened when they didn't. When people enter therapy, they do so to get better. They want to change. People also tend to look for some explanation for why they have a problem. Victims come to trust the person they have chosen to help them.

Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary Essay

Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary is undoubtedly one of the most controversial works in its age due to the immoral nature of its protagonist, Emma Bovary. Emma passes with good reason for one of the most powerful portraits of a woman in fiction, the most living and truest to life where sentimental young woman whose foolishly romantic ideas on life and love, cause her to become dissatisfied with her humdrum husband and the circumstances of her married life. Her feeling of disillusionment led her first into two desperate hopeless love affairs, and then to an agonizing and ugly death from arsenic. Emma is first and foremost, a person of sensuous nature, and more a romantic. Her sensuality is combined with vulgar imagination and a considerable degree of naivete. She symbolizes the double illusion. First the illusion that things change for the better in time; then the same illusion of spatial terms, the closer things were something that should be turned away from. She accepts Charles, the healthy doctor, because he represents the outside world. She sees matrimony in terms of a candle-lit midnight wedding. But marriage itself utterly disappoints her. She begins to dream of a happiness that can exist in faraway places but to no avail. Emma’s monotonous existence is disrupted by the invitation to a real ball. Slowly her fantasies come to crystallize in a particular town. It is accompanied by neglect of all materials and an over readiness to fall in love. Emma loves life and pleasure, much more than she loves a man. She is more ardent than passionate. She was in love with Leon, but his physical presence troubled the voluptuousness of this meditation. The Rodolphe affair is in fact a kind of physical parody of the idealized relationship she maintained with Leon. Rodolphe exists on a lower plane, an animal existence. Her marriage, her boredom, her newly awakened sexual desires, and her romantic dreams – all contribute to her fall. Emma is undoubtedly a victim of circumstances. Unlucky coincidences, stupid men and human weaknesses force her fate to be damned for ever. Charles has been systematically invented to be her undoer. She made efforts to love him and repented on tears for having given into another. She could have experienced the great revenge and pride of women, to give birth to a man; but it is a girl. In looking for religious help, she might have had better luck than with the unusually inept Bournisien, another character worthy of her bad luck. The walls against which she will finally dash herself to the pieces have been erected around her as by an evil artist. Emma is sustained by willpower neither from within nor from her husband. In the absence of will power she has enough passion, a somber selfishness to drive a man to criminal deeds. We see her willingness to make Rodolphe into a murderer and she would make Leon, a thief. Though she is a creature of passion, she does not kill herself out of love, but for money. She reconstructs a world of love and luxury, joined like body and soul in the dream of an ideal life. Her life will follow a parallel course on the financial and on the sentimental plane. The disappointment of one coincides with the troubles of another. Flaubert treats her death as damnation where the devil is present in the garb of a blind man, a grimaced monster she glimpsed during her adulterous trips to Rouen. She dies with an atrocious laugh of horror and despair. Emma lacks all capacity for sympathy. Imagination has consumed all other faculties and sentiments. She never had an image dependent on moral beauty. In fact, her life was spent in seeking an image for herself. The search was doomed to destruction because no earthly role of herself or of love could satisfy her. In her own self determined embrace of romantic passion, she traces her own path to destruction. In doing so she moves us not to pity but simply to horror. Emma is essentially a novelistic creation set forth in all her internal complexities. Her dreams are destined by reality to wither into lies. Flaubert’s great success with Emma is that he makes the reader come into imaginative contact with his heroine, a kind of intimacy as the tale progresses and finally ends with tragedy for its heroine.

The Vaccine Controversy Essay examples - 1641 Words

The Vaccine Controversy Janira Sanchez Intro to Biology Professor Martin July 22, 2010 The Vaccine Controversy The vaccine controversy is the dispute over the morality, ethics, effectiveness, and /or safety of vaccinations. The medical and scientific evidence is that the benefits of preventing suffering and death from infectious diseases outweigh rare adverse effects of immunization. Since vaccination began in the late 18th century, opponents have claimed that vaccines do not work, that they are or may be dangerous, that individuals should rely on personal hygiene instead, or that mandatory vaccinations violate individual rights or religious principles. And since then, successful campaigns against vaccinations have†¦show more content†¦Other critics argue that immunity given by vaccines is only temporarily and requires boosters, whereas those who survive the disease become permanently immune. Lack of complete vaccine coverage increases the risk of disease for the entire population, including those who have been vaccinated, because it reduces herd immunity. For example, measles targets children between the ages of 9 and 12 months, and the short window between the disappearance of maternal antibody (before which the vaccine often fails to seroconvert) and natural infection means that vaccinated children frequently are still vulnerable. Herd immunity lessens this vulnerability, if all the children are vaccinated. Increasing herd immunity during an outbreak or threatened outbreak is the most widely accepted justification for mass vaccination. Mass vaccination also helps to increase coverage rapidly, thus obtaining herd immunity, when a new vaccine is introduced. Commonly used vaccines are a cost – effective and preventive way of promoting good health, compared to the cost of treatment of acute or chronic diseases. In the U.S. during the year 2001, routine childhood immunizations against seven diseases were estimated to save over $40 billion per year, overall social costs including $10 billion in direct health costs, and the societal benefit  œ cost ratio for these vaccinations wasShow MoreRelatedThe Vaccine And Autism Controversy1179 Words   |  5 PagesVaccine and Autism Controversy Many parents are skeptical about getting their children vaccinated because of the fear that it may cause autism.
